Bike Park
Work has resumed with the mild weather. We should have a progress report for you soon, but in the meantime have a look at the site plan:
Update 6th November 2009
Gravity Logics’ John Cowan arrived on site this past Monday Nov 2nd and started building jumps almost immediately with a tracked bobcat provided by winn rentals. John expects to have the jumps built by the end of next week Nov 13th. MTBco volunteer insurance has just been received and the site is preparing for the arrival of volunteers. The first catch basin excavation has been completed and the second has been started. Wood for the drop in ramp has started to arrive and should be ready for next week. Katim Enterprises has had 1 laborer on site this week until this morning at which point we increased to a total of three. We brought in an extra 300cy of fill from the cnc building as per Gravity Logics request to help ensure correct grade for the jumps. Rutland Waterworks District has completed the road crossing and water is now available on site. An application for temporary water use will be made shortly. VDL Mechanical will be on site today to place the water meter vault. The bioinfiltration depression has been excavated and drainage piping installation is nearly completed. John Cowan has put a request into to MTBco for a donation of a quad to assist with compaction of the jumps and landings and John has also requested to meet with MTBco representatives and local riders on site.

MTBco and The City of Kelowna’s Mountain Bike Skills Park
Its gonna take the whole community’s support but soon all mountain bikers in the Central Okanagan will have their first mountain bike skills park to enjoy…but we need help!
Those bumps, jumps and stunts at the Mountain Bike Skills Park won’t build themselves, so Mountain Bikers of the Central Okanagan and the City of Kelowna are putting the call out for donations of equipment and services.
“We want to make this skills park the best it can be, so that everyone from beginners to experts will find parts of it suited to their skill level,” said Andrew Gibbs, the City’s Parks & Public Spaces Manager. “We want to build it to its full capacity and really create a full-service park from Day One.”
City Council endorsed the park plan earlier this year for a 3.4 hectare site at the corner of Hollywood Road South and East Kelowna Road. It is also a unique partnership between the City and the MTBco to construct Kelowna’s fist publicly funded mountain bike skills park.
The City is providing the land, $242,000 for design, construction and support during special events. MTBco will manage the park, provide education and training for users and maintain the bike facilities.
“We’re looking for donations of everything from dirt and road aggregate to excavators, trucks and lumber,” says Rob Cochrane, MTBco’s Bike Park Director. “We’ve built and maintained trails all over this area, but this is the first skills park of this scale we’ve been involved in and, as advocates of the sport, we want to do it right.”
Working with Gravity Logic of Whistler, MTBco and the City have finalized a design and are preparing to begin construction in October.
“We want to get in there and get it done by November, so if we could get some help from donors – whether it’s by lending equipment and operators, or the tools and materials to build the stunts, or by taking out a MTBco membership – we can have it ready to go this season,” says Cochrane.
