Toonie #6 is now history, and it seems the only changes atop the leader boards is what socks Evan is going to wear.
Chainline Cycle came out to cook us up some grub.
Jensen, sporting a retro style of some kind.
In addition to a woman rider, we also had Nathan out representing the junior segment of the community.

Another Toonie, another pair of socks from Evan. It seems to be working for him, at least for this series. Setting new course records at the Toonie’s is, in Evan’s own words, his “biggest accomplishment of the year…”
Another first was the Le Mans start. Thank Mike for that brainwave.
Although the route wasn’t all that clear. “Do we go over here?”
Nope, it’s this way…
Hey, wait for me!
The evil genius that is our leader…
OK, how about some action photos of racers?
That would be Brian, the new Rocky Mtn. Bikes rep that showed up to represent.
Here’s a few more….
Check out the swag you’re missing out on. That’s a ti railed saddle there.
The first place woman get’s her prize from our podium girl. Even better than the Tour de France ones in my book.
Yeah, that’s the prize you want. There’s cold beer in those bags.
Big thanks to Union Cycle for providing the GIANT burgers. They look like 29’rs from this angle.
The Le Mans start seems to have worked. A new course record again (the clock started when the leaders crossed the start on the bikes), and everyone seems to have clocked a quicker time today.

Hey Stu! Where’s the pics you took?
Until Stu sends those over, no pics, but you can check out the times at least.
Evan set a new course record with a blistering time of 38:13, and for the first time ever we had more than one woman show up to contest the ladies category. Now if we can only get everyone to show up on the same day, we’ll have some real racing…uh I mean non-competetive riding, going on.

Kelowna’s newest mountain bike park officially opened on Sunday.
Deputy Mayor Angela Reid opened the skills park by holding one end of a ribbon over her head. A biker made a perfect jump over Reid’s head, thus breaking the ribbon and opening the park.
“This park is the first of its kind within the City and is part of our commitment to support active living,” says Reid.
“The Kelowna area is world-renown for mountain biking and some of the sport’s top riders helped with the park development. It’s been a true partnership effort. This site and the rider training programs offered here will help support the progression of the sport.”
Johnny Smoke, president of the Mountain Bikers of the Central Okanagan says they are pleased to partner with the City on the park.
“The park offers something for all ages and skill levels, from beginner to expert,” says Smoke.
Under an operating agreement with the City of Kelowna, the Mountain Bikers of Central Okanagan will manage the park, maintain the bike facilities, and provide skill clinics for riders.
Accessible from the Greenway, the park was officially named Mission Creek Mountain Bike Skills Park.
Located on a 3.4 hectare site at 1960 Hollywood Road South, the park features a pump track and six dirt jump lanes progressing from beginner to expert.
The new features were put to the test during the grand opening as an all-day long jump jam tested the skills of local riders.
“We worked closely with the mountain biking community to create a regional strategy to guide future development,” says Reid.
“This facility was identified as a priority and is an important step to reach our vision for the Central Okanagan to be recognized world-wide for its excellence in mountain bike trails, facilities and management.”
The $243,000 park was designed in collaboration with local riders.

Sure, it’s been open to the public for a couple of weeks, but we can’t let this landmark event pass without a party. So we’re having one.
Sunday, July 25th at 10:00 am. There will be demos, a Jump Jam and contest, music, and lots of cool stuff. The Jump Contest will be open to anyone who is an MTBco member, and we’ll be there early to sign people up. Prizes for the jam are being donated by all the local shops:
There will be limited parking on site, so we will be providing a shuttle service from the school down on Hollywood Rd. to the site. Or save yourself the hassle and RIDE YOUR BIKE! Even if you park several blocks away, riding your bike to the park makes more sense. Thanks to Monashee Adventure Tours for providing the shuttles.
The park couldn’t have been built without the following supporters:
- Winn Rentals
- Tree Line Design and Creations
- J & M Contracting
- AG Appel
- Super Save Group
- Mod U Loc Fencing
- Redline Bobcat Services
- Big Steel Box
- Connor Steeves
- Kelowna Ready Mix
..and of course don’t forget the City of Kelowna, because it wouldn’t have happened without them.
There are also two maintenance days between now and then, one this coming Sunday at 9:30 to do any major work on the park, and another next Saturday to buff ‘n fluff the park for the next day.

Toonie #3 is in the books, and we’re slowly gaining momentum with each ride. 18 people came out, but more importantly we’re getting different faces each time. When we get everyone out on the same date, it’s going to be very busy.
If you haven’t come out yet, you really need to give this a go. Not only is no-one taking this ‘race’ idea at all seriously, but where else can you get a great ride, a feed, a beer, and some swag for a lousy $2?
Nowhere, that’s where.
The next event is July 21st at Smith Creek, so see you there.

The riders prepare for the start of Toonie #2
The first two Toonie Rides are in the books, and it’s turning out well. A small turnout at the first event was followed by twice as many riders last week. Only 8 riders made it out the first time to ride Smith Creek, but it was a great time nonetheless. Here’s the results from the first ever Toonie Ride in the Kelowna area:

The second ride was much better attended, with 16 riders turning up. Sovereign Cycle also showed up to supply a bit of a barbeque at the finish, and Tree Brewing was kind enough to supply some refreshing prizes for the winner, which was promptly shared around. Times were similar to rond 1, with it taking around an hour on average to complete the course. Evan let Aart finish first this time, and we had our first woman show up. Also, a certain somewhat soft in the middle club president made an appearance, finishing in a very average time of 59 minutes.
If you’ve ever wondered what racing was like, but are put off by the thought of serious competition, then you should really come out and give this a try. It’s a far cry from a real ‘race’, but having a set course and all riding together provides all the best parts of the racing experience with none of the downsides. Plus there’s food, prizes, and a chance to meet other riders. Pretty darn good for a measly $2.

With 90 racers showing up, and a rare bout of great weather, I think we have to call this year’s Kamikaze Super D a success. Seth Cowie set the pace with a time of 19:07, but with other riders hot on his heels it was not a runaway victory. Last years winner Mike Kittmer came 3rd this year only a few seconds behind at 19:18. Here’s your top ten:
Adult Men
1 Seth Cowie – 19.07
2 Michael Rullkoter – 19.10
3 Mike Kittner- 19.18
4 Chris George – 19.24
5 jonathan cole – 19.26
6 Ryan Schnepf – 19.44
7 Michael Cambridge – 19.46
8 Simon Gauthier – 19.53
9 Garrett Roberton – 19.58
10 Scott Spence – 20.04
On the ladies side, it was Samantha Leach taking the win with a comfortable margin over Stacey Smith in just under 25 minutes, and for the junior men Michael Kerkovices clocked in at 22:02 for the victory.
Adult Women
1 Samantha Leach – 24.53
2 Stacey Smith – 25.39
3 Julia Gubbels – 26.59
Junior Men
1 Michael Kerkovices – 22.02
2 Jeremy Weiss – 23.21
3 Jackson Blobel – 25.29

Toonie Rides are starting June 9th at Smith Creek on the Westside. If you’ve never done a Toonie Ride, they’re similar to a race in that there’s a set route and everyone starts at the same time. Unlike a race, it’s a lot less money and there’s nothing on the line but pride. They’re a great time and well worth the measly $2 entry fee. If you go to them regularly, you can gauge your performance against others in the riding community, and probably meet some new riding partners as well.
For more info and location details, check out the Toonie Ride page.
